NSW Regional Conservatorium music students perform with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra

Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra

NSW Regional Conservatoriums Project 2014

Students from Regional Conservatoriums have taken part in a project run by the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra (AOBO) and the NSW Regional Conservatoriums. It was a unique opportunity for regional students to work with the AOBO and to visit Sydney for a three day immersion experience.

During the lead up to the three day immersion experience and during the experience students had the opportunity to:

  • Participate in video-linked masterclasses with musicians from the AOBO
  • Participate in sessions at the Sydney Opera House and Opera Australia’s Opera Centre in Surry Hills, Sydney.

During the immersion experience in Sydney regional students met AOBO musicians, took part in ensemble rehearsals; undertook a tour of both the Opera Centre and Opera House; rehearsed with an Opera Australia conductor, Guillaume Tourniaire; observed rehearsals for Opera Australia’s production of The Elixir of Love, and performed for family and friends in the Joan Sutherland Theatre orchestra pit at the Sydney Opera House.

The Association of NSW Regional Conservatoriums is teaming up with the Sydney Opera House to give young musicians in regional areas the chance of a lifetime in November.

The London Symphony Orchestra will be visiting Australia in November, performing in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. The performances will be conducted by LSO principal conductor Valery Gergiev. Performances will include works by Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Shostakovich.

In partnership with the Sydney Opera House the Association of NSW Regional Conservatoriums is organising a 4-day Regional Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra workshop, to be held in Sydney to coincide with the visit of the London Symphony Orchestra. This workshop will commence on Monday November 24 and finish on Thursday November 27. Workshop activities will take place at the Arts Unit in Lewisham, and the Sydney Opera House.

On the first day the orchestra will meet for the first time and rehearse the selected music. After a full day of rehearsals the students will have the chance to hear the orchestra in full flow, with every student given a ticket to hear the 8.00 performance that evening.

For the next three days students will reherarse with tutors from the London Symphony Orchestra, concluding with a final peformance on Thursday November 27, where more musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra will join with the group to perform.

To be eligible for this once-in-a-lifetime experience students must be a school-aged student of a regional conservatorium and at least AMEB grade 4 standard on any of the following instruments:

Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, Percussion, Harp

For this workshop there are limited places for Violin and Cello students who are AMEB Grade 1-3 standard.

In addition to the Sydney Opera House workshop students will prepare the selected repertoire in advance and particpate in video conference sessions with members of the London Symphony Orchestra.

The best news of all – this entire experience, including a free ticket to the concert is being made available at NO COST TO THE STUDENT. You will need to cover your travel to and from Sydney and the cost of accommodation (if required). Some food will be provided, but not every meal.
